Shining Bright: The Impact of Team Leaders

Great teams aren’t just made up of skilled players—they’re made up of leaders who bring out the best in everyone around them.

At Latrobe Boys Soccer, leadership isn’t limited to those with a captain’s armband. We believe every player has the potential to be a leader—on the field, in the locker room, and in the community.

This post is dedicated to the players who lead by example, speak up when it matters, and create a culture of hard work, respect, and unity.

Leadership in Action

Team leaders come in many forms. Some are vocal motivators. Others lead with quiet consistency. Some lead through encouragement, while others step up during tough moments when morale is low.

Here’s what leadership looks like on our team:

  • Helping new players feel welcome and supported
  • Maintaining focus during high-pressure moments
  • Holding teammates accountable—with respect
  • Communicating with coaches, referees, and each other
  • Representing Latrobe soccer with class and integrity

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being consistent, dependable, and willing to serve the team first.

The Captain’s Role

Our captains carry a special responsibility: to lead not just with their talent, but with their character. Captains help set the tone at practices and games, model sportsmanship, and work closely with coaches to support team cohesion.

We choose captains not solely based on skill, but on their leadership qualities—maturity, work ethic, and their ability to lift others up.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” – John C. Maxwell

Even so, you don’t need a title to lead. Every player can step up and set an example. Sometimes the most impactful leaders are the ones who do the little things right, every day.

Why Leadership Matters

Strong leaders create strong teams. When leaders model accountability and respect, that energy spreads across the locker room. When they stay positive after a loss, others follow. When they hustle, others match it.

Leadership is how teams push through adversity. It’s how trust is built. And it’s how champions are made—not just on the scoreboard, but in life.

Many of our alumni have gone on to be leaders in their schools, careers, and communities. The lessons they learned here—in communication, discipline, and teamwork—stick long after the final whistle.

Developing Leaders at Latrobe

We don’t leave leadership to chance. Throughout the season, we encourage players to:

  • Take initiative during drills and training
  • Mentor younger or less experienced players
  • Speak up with encouragement during practices and games
  • Reflect on how their actions affect the team

We also talk about leadership off the field—how players conduct themselves in school, how they treat others, and how they represent our program in the community.

Player Spotlights

We’ll be highlighting our 2025 team leaders this fall—stay tuned on our social media and blog for profiles and player Q&As. These spotlights will showcase not only talent, but the heart and drive behind each leader’s journey.
