⚽ What College Soccer Coaches Look For
Coaches shared common priorities when evaluating players—here’s what they consistently emphasized across interviews:
- Highlight Reels Matter
- Keep it under 3–5 minutes. “Teaser to want to see more.”
- Lead with your best moments.
- Include actions before and after the play
- Tailor it to your position. – Coach Karwoski, LaRoche
- Academic Standards
- Most schools expect GPA: minimum 3.0, top programs look for 3.5+
- Dual enrollment and honors/AP classes show academic mindset
- Character and leadership outside of class is just as important. – Coach Bowman, CMU
- Personal Fit > Program Prestige
- Know what you want: campus, school size, dorm comfort, roster size, and academic major. – Coach Broadwater, PSU GA
📅 When to Start the College Soccer Recruiting Process
It’s never too early to begin understanding your path to college soccer. While each player’s journey is unique, here’s a timeline many coaches recommend:
- Freshman: Explore colleges & levels of play
- Sophomore: Start coach outreach, build highlight reel
- Junior: Narrow list, visit campuses, attend ID camps
- Senior: Finalize school list, apply, and stay in touch
“You want to be on a coach’s radar before your junior year.” – Coach Bowman, CMU
📨 How to Connect with College Coaches
Emails should come directly from the student-athlete. Coaches value maturity, initiative, and professionalism.

🏕️ College ID Camps & Showcase Events
College ID camps and showcases are a valuable part of the recruiting process, but not all are created equal. Here’s how to choose wisely:
- Attend camps at schools you’re seriously considering
- Multi-school ID camps = broader exposure but less 1-on-1 time
- Some camps = $$$ fundraisers, not recruiting tools
- Best camps: those paired with open houses/tours
