Knowing which questions to ask college soccer coaches at ID camps can help you stand out—and make smarter decisions during recruiting. When you attend a soccer ID camp, you’re not just showing off your skills—you’re also evaluating the schools, coaches, and programs to see if they’re the right fit for you. One of the best ways to make a strong impression (and gather valuable insights) is by asking the right questions.

These 15 questions will help you learn more about the program, show coaches that you’re serious, and help you make informed decisions throughout your recruiting journey.

1. What does your recruiting timeline look like for my class?

This shows you’re thinking ahead and want to understand how soon they’ll be making decisions.

2. What positions are you currently recruiting?

Coaches may not be looking for your specific position in your grad year—and it’s better to know upfront.

3. What do you look for in players at ID camps?

Each coach has a different evaluation style. Ask what traits matter most to them.

4. How many players are currently on your roster, and how many are graduating soon?

This helps you understand potential openings and playing time opportunities.

5. What is a typical week like during the season?

Get a feel for how the team balances training, travel, school, and recovery.

6. What kind of academic support is available for student-athletes?

College soccer is a big commitment. Make sure you’ll be supported off the field as well.

7. What are your team values or culture?

Do they emphasize leadership? Family? Competition? Make sure it aligns with your values.

8. Do you offer athletic scholarships, and how are they typically awarded?

Not every program can offer athletic aid—and those that do often split scholarships across multiple players.

9. What is your policy on redshirting?

Some programs routinely redshirt freshmen; others rarely do. Ask what you should expect.

10. What does your offseason training program look like?

Strong programs train year-round. Ask about expectations in the offseason.

11. What are your expectations for incoming freshmen?

Do they expect you to come in ready to compete for time—or focus on development?

12. What is the team’s academic performance like?

Graduation and GPA rates matter. You’re a student-athlete, after all.

13. What’s the housing situation like for student-athletes?

Ask if athletes room together, have special housing, or any restrictions.

14. What are your expectations around social media and team conduct?

Many programs have specific rules. Be sure your digital footprint aligns.

15. What’s the best way to stay in touch with you after this camp?

Always end with a plan for follow-up. It shows you’re organized and serious about your interest.

Bonus Tip: Ask Questions Based on Your Priorities

If academics are a top priority, focus on tutoring, advising, and GPA expectations. If you’re targeting playing time, ask about depth charts, style of play, or freshman minutes. Every athlete’s goals are different, so tailor your questions to what matters most to you. Coaches appreciate players who know what they’re looking for.

Remember: you’re not expected to ask all of these questions at once. Choose the ones that feel most relevant to your goals—and don’t be afraid to write them down before camp.
