Scott Shaffer has returned to Greater Latrobe Boys Soccer as Head Coach, bringing a deep well of soccer experience, leadership, and community commitment to the Wildcats program. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Wildcat Soccer as the program continues to build on a strong foundation of tradition, discipline, and competitive excellence.
Coach Shaffer most recently served as Head Boys Soccer Coach at Derry Area, where he led his program with a focus on accountability, development, and team culture. Prior to his time at Derry Area, Shaffer was an Assistant Coach for Greater Latrobe Boys Soccer under long-time head coach Tom Kennedy, giving him firsthand knowledge of the Wildcats program and its expectations.
That familiarity, paired with his broader coaching background, allows Coach Shaffer to step into the role with confidence and continuity. He understands what it means to represent “Latrobe” on and off the field and brings a steady approach to preparing student-athletes for the pace, intensity, and responsibility of high school soccer.
Beyond the high school level, Scott Shaffer serves as President and Staff Coach at Loyalhanna United Soccer Club. In this role, he works closely with athletes across multiple age groups, emphasizing technical development, tactical understanding, and a love for the game. His involvement at the club level reflects his long-term commitment to growing soccer throughout the region and helping players build skills that translate from the training ground to game day.
Coach Shaffer holds a USSF D License and is passionate about advancing the game while supporting the overall growth of his players. He believes strongly in teaching life skills through soccer, including responsibility, teamwork, resilience, and leadership—values that align closely with the Greater Latrobe Boys Soccer program and its longstanding tradition.
Scott resides in Unity Township with his wife Carrie—affectionately known around the program as “Mrs. Coach”—and their three children. Their oldest son, Jacob, is a former Wildcat soccer player and is currently in his second year at Bucknell University, where he is studying Chemical Engineering. The family’s continued connection to the program makes Scott’s return especially meaningful.
As Head Coach, Scott Shaffer aims to build a program culture where every player feels valued, challenged, and motivated to grow. His approach centers on clear expectations, consistent development, and a team-first mindset—helping players improve individually while strengthening the group as a whole. He is committed to developing well-rounded student-athletes while continuing the tradition of excellence, pride, and sportsmanship that defines Greater Latrobe Boys Soccer.
Commitment to Player Development and Program Growth
A central focus of Scott Shaffer’s coaching philosophy is long-term player development. He believes that success at the high school level is built through consistent training, attention to detail, and an emphasis on fundamentals that allow players to grow year over year. Practices under Coach Shaffer are designed to challenge athletes while reinforcing habits that translate into game situations.
Equally important is his commitment to communication and trust within the program. Coach Shaffer values clear expectations and believes that players perform best when they understand their roles and feel supported by their coaching staff. This approach helps foster accountability while creating an environment where athletes are encouraged to compete, learn from mistakes, and support one another.
Coach Shaffer also places strong emphasis on collaboration with families and the broader soccer community. He understands the importance of alignment between school, club, and home, and works to ensure that players are supported both academically and athletically. His leadership reflects a balanced approach—one that prioritizes development, sportsmanship, and pride in representing Greater Latrobe Boys Soccer.
The Wildcats are excited to welcome Coach Shaffer back and look forward to the leadership and vision he brings as the program prepares for the seasons ahead.
